Madison Y. Johnson and family papers, 1822-1906.

Legal, railroad, real estate, business, political, and personal papers of Madison Young Johnson (1817-1890), a Galena lawyer, real estate investor, and Democratic politician. Includes a diary (1862 Aug. 28-Nov. 20.) and other material on his imprisonment as a civilian for opposing the Union side in the Civil War and asserting his right to dissent. Plus personal and business papers of his wife, his son Madison Leslie Johnson, and various members of the Johnson, Wight, and Calmes families. Many items relate to Jo Daviess County and Galena, Illinois; others pertain to Missouri. The diary was kept by Johnson during his captivity as a political prisoner held at Fort Lafayette and Fort Delaware. Contains autographs of other civilians and Confederate officers held prisoner at Fort Delaware. One of the oversize folders contains materials on Johnson's Galena home.
